On March 1, 2025, over 300 people gathered at the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park near Ashford, WA to advocate for public lands - national parks, national forests, and BLM land.

I believe it is our duty to stand up for what you believe in -- I showed up to the protest to voice my beliefs and amplify people's voices through the lens of my camera. Here are the voices of the people from the Mount Rainier National Park protest.

Our public lands require diligent stewardship by a dedicated team of federal employees, encompassing a wide range of specialists, including wildlife biologists, fire crews, trail maintenance crews, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and maintenance personnel, among many others. Each of these professionals brings a unique set of skills and expertise that is essential for the effective management and preservation of our natural landscapes.

Wildlife biologists play a critical role in monitoring animal populations, studying ecosystems, and implementing conservation strategies that ensure the protection of biodiversity.

Fire crews are vital for managing controlled burns and responding to wildfires, which can devastate vast areas of land if not properly handled.

Trail crews are responsible for maintaining the extensive network of hiking, biking, and hunting trails that allow the public to enjoy these beautiful areas safely and responsibly.

EMTs are on standby to provide immediate medical assistance in case of emergencies, ensuring that visitors can enjoy their outdoor experiences with peace of mind.

Maintenance personnel handle the upkeep of facilities and infrastructure, making sure that parks and recreational areas remain accessible and welcoming to the public.

Without the concerted efforts of these crucial individuals with their specialized skill sets, our public lands would be left vulnerable to exploitation and mismanagement, often occurring away from the public's eye. This neglect could lead to overuse, habitat destruction, and a decline in the quality of our natural resources. Furthermore, the absence of proper oversight could allow for illegal activities, such as poaching or unregulated resource extraction, to flourish unchecked. It is imperative that we recognize the importance of these stewards who work tirelessly to monitor and protect our lands on behalf of the American people. Their contributions not only preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of our public lands but also ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from these invaluable resources.
